Part 1 Model: Defining the "Vantage" Essence

To get started, look at this example for a hypothetical documentary series called "Vantage." We don't just say it's "about history"; we define the emotional and visual rules first.

1. Brand Essence (The Keywords)

Instead of a long paragraph, we choose 3 "Filter Keywords." Every design choice must pass through these:

  • Grounded: (Visual consequence: Use earthy, natural colors; avoid neon.)

  • Intellectual: (Visual consequence: Use clean, classic Serif fonts; avoid "fun" or "bouncy" layouts.)

  • Panoramic: (Visual consequence: Focus on wide-angle shots and plenty of white space in graphics.)

2. The Positioning Statement

"Vantage is a documentary series that explores global history through a modern, minimalist lens, prioritizing human stories over academic jargon."

Assignment: Your Turn (The "Fill-in-the-Blanks")

Now that you've seen the model, you will apply it to one of the scenarios below. You are responsible for deciding the Color, Type, and Motion, but I have provided the "Essence" to get your engine started.

Choose Your Identity

Pick one of these three starting points for your assignment:

Option A: "The Current" (Tech News)

  • The Essence: Urgent | Precise | Electric

  • The Vibe: Fast-paced cuts, high-contrast colors, and "glitch" transitions.

  • Your Task: Find a "Precise" font and an "Electric" accent color that passes accessibility.

Option B: "Slow Burn" (Cooking/Lifestyle)

  • The Essence: Warm | Artisanal | Intentional

  • The Vibe: Long takes, soft focus, and organic, handwritten-style accents.

  • Your Task: Choose a "Warm" color palette and a "Handwritten" font that is actually legible on screen.

Option C: "Deep Dive" (Science/Data)

  • The Essence: Transparent | Clinical | Vast

  • The Vibe: Grid-based layouts, thin lines (but not too thin!), and smooth, linear camera movements.

  • Your Task: Define a "Clinical" typography system and use the AI prompts to find a "Vast" background style.

Use AI to "Stress Test" Your Choices

Once you've picked a scenario, use these prompts to see if your "Essence" keywords actually look good together.

Model Prompt for "The Current":

Create a mood board for a tech news brand called 'The Current'. Keywords: Urgent, Precise, Electric. Use a palette of deep charcoal and neon cyan. Show examples of bold condensed sans-serif typography and sharp, angular graphic elements.

Model Prompt for "Slow Burn":

Create a mood board for a cooking series called 'Slow Burn'. Keywords: Warm, Artisanal, Intentional. Use a palette of terracotta, cream, and sage green. Show examples of elegant serif typography and organic, hand-drawn textures.

Model Prompt for "Deep Dive"

A minimalist brand style tile for a science and data documentary series called 'Deep Dive'. Keywords: Transparent, Clinical, Vast. Use a color palette of deep space blues, cool glowing cyan, and translucent white overlays. Show examples of clean, technical monospaced typography for data points and a precise, modern sans-serif for headlines. Include graphic elements like subtle wireframe data grids, thin connecting lines, and abstract holographic interface elements. The overall aesthetic is futuristic, high-tech, and intellectual.

Pro-Tip: The "Swap" Test

If you can take your color palette and put it on a different scenario without it feeling weird, your palette isn't specific enough. A "Slow Burn" color (terracotta) should feel "wrong" if you try to use it for "The Current."

Deliverables

You will be building a visual identity and a motion system for your chosen scenario. Think of this as creating the "Instruction Manual" and the "Prototype" for a professional media project. This is a practice project for your Explainer Video so that you will better understand the process and form.

Here is exactly what you need to turn in:

Deliverable 1: The Brand Kit (The Strategy)

Format: A single-page PDF or high-quality image (e.g., your "Identity Cheat Sheet").

This is your project’s Source of Truth. It must include:

  • The Essence: List your 3–5 keywords and your 1-sentence positioning statement.

  • Color Palette: Display your Primary, Secondary, and Accent colors with their Hex Codes (e.g., #00A896).

  • Accessibility Check: Include a small note or screenshot proving your text/background color combination passes the WCAG 4.5:1 contrast ratio.

  • Typography: Show your Header and Body font choices. Briefly state why this pairing fits your brand's essence.

  • Logo/Wordmark: Show how your project title looks in its official font, including a "Light" version and a "Dark" version.

Download Motion Assets

You will need this for Deliverables 2 and 3

Deliverable 2: The Style Pack Spec (The Implementation)

Format: A single high-resolution "Key Frame" (Still Image).

This frame proves that your identity can survive a technical environment.

Take a screenshot from your editing software that shows:

  • Lower Third: A name and title graphic using your brand colors and fonts.

  • Logo Bug: Your icon or wordmark placed in a corner (Top Right or Bottom Left).

  • Technical Overlay: You must have your "Title Safe" and "Action Safe" guides visible over the frame to prove your elements are placed correctly.

Deliverable 3: The Motion Sample (The Demo)

Format: A 10–15 second video file (MP4, H.264).

This is a "screen test" for your Brand Kit. It doesn't need to be a full story; it just needs to show movement. It must include:

  • An Intro Title: A 3-second opening that demonstrates your Motion Principle (e.g., does it snap, slide, or fade?).

  • Lower Third Action: Show your name graphic entering the screen, staying for 5 seconds, and exiting.

  • A Branded Transition: One cut between two clips that uses a transition style (Hard Cut, Dissolve, or Wipe) that matches your brand's "vibe."

Non-Negotiable: File Naming & Organization

In a professional studio, your work doesn't exist if the lead editor can't find it. You must name your files exactly as follows:

ScenarioName_YourLastName_DeliverableType_v01

  • Example: TheCurrent_Horton_BrandKit_v01.pdf

  • Example: TheCurrent_Horton_KeyFrame.jpg

  • Example: TheCurrent_Horton_MotionSample_v01.mp4

Pro Tip

Before you export your video, double-check your easing. If your brand is "Urgent," your motion should be sharp and fast. If your brand is "Warm," your motion should be smooth and organic. Consistency between your words and your motion is how you stand out.
